A $34 million renovation is transforming a heavily trafficked H-E-B in Edinburg, Texas through 2027

Large-scale construction underway at Freddy Gonzalez Drive store
A major, multi-year renovation is underway at the H-E-B located at 2700 W. Freddy Gonzalez Drive in Edinburg, a high-traffic store that serves a fast-growing part of the Rio Grande Valley. The project carries an estimated price tag of $34 million and is expected to run into early 2027.
The work includes both a significant physical expansion and a department-by-department interior refresh designed to increase capacity and broaden product selection while keeping the store open during construction. Shoppers should expect temporary routing changes inside the building as crews progress through phased work areas.
What customers can see changing now
Much of the visible progress has been concentrated on the west side and the perimeter of the building, where construction has added new exterior features and reorganized customer flow. The project includes a newly built wing, updated storefront elements and changes to entrances that are intended to accommodate higher volumes of foot traffic and carts, as well as improve circulation between parking and the sales floor.
Parking and pickup logistics are also being reworked as part of the renovation. An expanded curbside staging area and dedicated customer parking have been introduced, reflecting continued demand for pickup services across the grocery sector.
Expanded fresh departments and updated prepared-food offerings
Inside, the renovation is planned around larger fresh-food and service areas and updated fixtures. Departments slated for expansion or modernization include produce, seafood and the meat market, alongside new counters and signage aimed at improving wayfinding and line management during peak hours.
The store’s Sushiya station is being redesigned, and new refrigerated cases are being added to support a wider range of items, including specialty dairy and soft cheeses. The updates align with broader grocery-industry investments in perimeter departments, where retailers typically concentrate fresh, prepared and higher-service offerings.
- New construction wing to increase overall footprint
- Expanded produce, meat and seafood departments
- Redesigned Sushiya counter and updated cold-case capacity
- Reconfigured curbside area with dedicated parking
- Ongoing phased interior work requiring temporary detours
Short-term disruptions, long-term timeline
Because the store remains open, parts of the interior are temporarily screened off as crews work, and shoppers may encounter moved aisles and closed sections at different stages. One notable temporary loss has been the store’s rotisserie chicken service, which is expected to return in spring as construction reaches the relevant back-of-house and prepared-food areas.
The project is scheduled to continue in phases, with full completion projected for early 2027.
For Edinburg, the renovation represents one of the larger recent H-E-B store investments in South Texas, aimed at expanding daily shopping capacity while updating departments that tend to draw the heaviest traffic.
