Arctic Blast Grips San Antonio

San Antonio is experiencing one of its coldest days of the winter season as a powerful arctic airmass remains entrenched over South-Central Texas. Residents are waking up to sub-freezing temperatures and hazardous conditions on Sunday, January 25, 2026. While the worst of the precipitation has moved through, the primary concern today shifts from active freezing rain to dangerously low wind chills and icy infrastructure that will make travel difficult through the morning hours.

Morning: Bitter Cold and Icy Surfaces

During the early morning hours, temperatures in the San Antonio metro area are hovering in the mid-20s, with many sensors reporting roughly 24°F to 26°F. Although lingering freezing rain and sleet are expected to exit the region between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., they have left behind a dangerous layer of ice on bridges, overpasses, and northern Bexar County roads. Morning conditions include:

  • Wind Chill: Values are dipping into the single digits and lower teens, reaching as low as 12°F due to north winds of 15 mph and gusts up to 28 mph.
  • Road Alerts: Travel is strongly discouraged through noon as bridges remain slick.
  • Warnings: A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for San Antonio until 12:00 p.m. today.

Afternoon: A Slow and Subtle Thaw

As we move into the afternoon, San Antonio will see a very slight reprieve from the freezing mark. Meteorologists expect the high to top out between 32°F and 35°F. While the sun may begin to peek through the cloud cover after midday, the warming will be minimal. Any melting that occurs on the roads will be slow, so motorists should remain cautious of slushy conditions that could quickly refreeze as the sun goes down.

Evening: Another Hard Freeze Ahead

The mercury will drop quickly once again this evening. By tonight, temperatures are forecast to fall back into the mid-20s (around 26°F to 27°F) under clearing skies. An Extreme Cold Warning remains active through Monday morning, highlighting the risk of a prolonged hard freeze. City officials have announced that while most non-essential operations are closed, public libraries, parks, and senior centers will remain open as resiliency hubs and warming locations for those in need.

Safety Reminders for the 4 Ps

The National Weather Service continues to urge residents to protect the '4 Ps' throughout this cold event:

  • People: Stay indoors and check on elderly neighbors.
  • Pets: Bring all pets inside; temperatures this low are life-threatening for animals left outdoors.
  • Pipes: Keep faucets dripping and cabinet doors open to prevent freezing.
  • Plants: Cover sensitive vegetation or bring potted plants inside.
