Winter Weather Advisory: Icy Roads and Freezing Temperatures

San Antonio residents are facing a significant weather event this Sunday, January 25, 2026, as an arctic blast moves through the region. Local meteorologists have issued warnings regarding freezing temperatures and the potential for ice accumulation on elevated surfaces, bridges, and overpasses. The City of San Antonio has activated emergency protocols, including 24-hour operation of the 311 phone line to assist residents with transportation to warming centers. Officials are strongly urging commuters to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary, as patchy ice and cold rain have made driving conditions unpredictable across Bexar County.

Major Weekend Closure: Loop 1604 and I-10 Interchange

For those who must travel, the most significant disruption today is the total closure of the Loop 1604 and Interstate 10 interchange on the North Side. As part of the ongoing $1.4 billion Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, TxDOT has closed all lanes of I-10 at the interchange. This closure began at 9 p.m. Friday and is scheduled to remain in effect until 5 a.m. Monday, January 26. Additionally, the eastbound and westbound frontage roads for Loop 1604 at the interchange are closed, along with several key exit ramps. Law enforcement is on-site to direct traffic through detours, but significant delays are expected throughout the day. Drivers are advised to use alternative routes such as Loop 410 or Wurzbach Parkway to bypass the construction zone.

Ongoing Highway Construction: I-35 NEX and US 90

Beyond the major weekend closure, construction crews remain active on several multi-year projects. The I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) project continues to impact traffic between North Walters Street and FM 1103. While Sunday traffic is typically lighter, the narrowed lanes and shifting traffic patterns near Windcrest require extra caution. Similarly, the U.S. Highway 90 expansion in Far West Bexar County is ongoing between Loop 410 and SH 211. Commuters in these areas should watch for heavy equipment moving near the frontage roads and potential short-term lane shifts as crews work on the new elevated structures.

VIA Metropolitan Transit: Better Bus Plan Implementation

Commuters utilizing public transport should be aware of the historic service expansion that went into effect earlier this month. As part of the Better Bus Plan, over 30 routes have seen improvements in frequency and reliability. Notably, Routes 5, 22, and 64 now operate at 30-minute frequencies on weekdays, and many routes have seen expanded late-night service until 12:30 a.m. For today's wintry conditions, VIA is coordinating with the city's 311 service to provide rides to emergency shelters. Passengers should expect some delays due to the weather and should check the VIA goLine or mobile app for real-time adjustments to bus schedules.

Local Closures and Delays

Several major attractions have adjusted their hours due to the freeze. The Alamo has announced a delayed opening today, January 25, and will not welcome visitors until 12 p.m. The Pearl Farmer's Market has been canceled for the day, and local museums, including Artpace and the Briscoe Western Art Museum, will remain closed to ensure the safety of staff and guests. Commuters should verify the status of their destinations before departing.
