Verdict and sentence finalized after brief jury deliberations

A Bexar County jury has found Roland Contreras Jr. guilty of murder in the April 6, 2023 shooting death of 33-year-old Gabriele Campos Del Angel outside a South Side taco stand. Court proceedings concluded Friday, March 27, 2026, with Contreras receiving a 50-year prison sentence under an agreement reached during the punishment phase of the trial.

The jury’s deliberations on guilt lasted about 30 minutes. Contreras, 35, then chose to resolve sentencing through a plea agreement that set the prison term at 50 years and established parole eligibility after 25 years.

What investigators said happened on April 6, 2023

The shooting occurred at about 9:30 p.m. in the parking lot of a food-truck location in the 1800 block of Southwest Military Drive near Commercial Avenue. Investigators said Campos Del Angel was at the taco stand with her estranged husband when Contreras approached and brandished a gun during a confrontation directed at the husband.

As the couple tried to leave, the husband ran to a Jeep and attempted to back out. During that maneuver, the vehicle bumped a parked car. Investigators said Contreras continued chasing the Jeep and fired a shot that went through a side window and struck Campos Del Angel in the chest. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said the husband drove to a nearby gas station and called for help, then provided information identifying Contreras to responding officers.

Arrest followed a standoff and weeks-long search

After the shooting, police said Contreras returned to his home, prompting a law-enforcement response that included SWAT officers attempting to make contact. Authorities have said they believed he was inside the residence early in the standoff, but he did not respond and was not found after officers searched the home.

Police later arrested Contreras nearly a month after the killing, taking him into custody without further incident.
