Weekly Official Update: Roadwork, Public Health, and Civic Deadlines

The City of San Antonio and regional authorities have issued several critical notices for Sunday, February 8, 2026. Residents are encouraged to review the following updates regarding major infrastructure projects, public health alerts, and upcoming civic deadlines to ensure a safe and informed start to the week.

TxDOT Construction and Traffic Alerts

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) continues its multi-billion-dollar overhaul of the Northside highway system. Drivers should be aware of the following active closures:

  • Loop 1604 North Expansion: A major overnight closure is concluding today at the intersection of Loop 1604 and Interstate 10. All lanes and U-turns at the La Cantera Parkway intersection remain closed through 5:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 8. These nightly shutdowns are necessary for ongoing bridge construction and the installation of steel girders.
  • Military Drive Improvements: A total closure is currently in effect on Military Drive from Reed Road to Rapla Crossing. This work, part of the 2022-2027 Bond Program, involves critical underground drainage installation. Pedestrian detours are in place as southside sidewalks are also restricted. Construction in this corridor is expected to continue throughout February.

Public Health and Wellness Advisories

Health officials are monitoring two significant developments affecting the San Antonio metro area this month:

  • Measles Awareness: Following confirmed cases of measles at regional detention facilities in Dilley, local health leaders are urging residents to verify their immunization records. While the current risk to the general public remains managed, the highly contagious nature of the virus has prompted increased surveillance across Bexar County.
  • American Heart Month: In observance of American Heart Month, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District is promoting cardiovascular wellness initiatives. Residents are encouraged to participate in community health screenings and support the national effort to raise awareness for heart disease prevention.

Public Safety: BCSO Wanted Person Alert

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office has issued an active public safety alert for Trizeah Nathaniel Deleon Gomez. Gomez is wanted in connection with a shooting that occurred on February 5 on the city's southeast side. He is considered armed and dangerous and was last seen driving a gray 2025 Ford Bronco. Authorities urge the public to exercise caution and report any information to the Sheriff’s Office immediately.

Election and Civic Notices

Citizens participating in the upcoming May 2026 uniform election should take note of several fast-approaching deadlines:

  • Candidate Filing: The deadline for candidates to file for a place on the May general election ballot is Friday, February 13, 2026.
  • Mail-in Ballots: Applications for a Ballot by Mail (ABBM) for the May election are currently being accepted. Eligible voters, including seniors and those with disabilities, should submit their applications early to ensure timely processing.
