Monday Morning Traffic Overview

As San Antonio begins the work week on Monday, February 23, 2026, commuters on the North Side are facing a significantly altered landscape. With the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) pushing forward on its $1.4 billion overhaul of Loop 1604, two major long-term closures at Blanco Road have officially taken effect, requiring immediate adjustments for thousands of daily drivers heading toward the office.

Major Disruptions on Loop 1604

The most critical update for this morning involves the Blanco Road interchange. Starting today, commuters will need to navigate around the following closures that are expected to remain in place through at least early March:

  • Westbound Loop 1604 Blanco Road Exit Ramp: This ramp is now closed for ongoing storm drain work. Drivers intending to exit at Blanco Road should prepare to exit earlier or follow posted detours toward Bitters Road.
  • Eastbound Loop 1604 Blanco Road Entrance Ramp: This entrance is closed to facilitate necessary ramp widening. Commuters entering the highway from the Blanco area are being diverted to the next available entrance ramp at Stone Oak Parkway.

These closures are part of the Segment 4 expansion, which aims to transform the corridor into a ten-lane expressway. While Segment 3 (I-10 to US 281) is nearing its Spring 2026 completion date, this new phase of work will continue to challenge North Side mobility through the remainder of the year.

I-35 NEX and Northeast Side Updates

On the Northeast Side, the I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) project continues to impact traffic flow. Crews are active on the elevated structures designed to carry new HOV and general-purpose lanes. While no total mainlane closures are scheduled for the Monday morning rush, drivers should stay alert for shifting lanes near the Schertz area and the Loop 1604 interchange. Nightly work on FM 2252 is also scheduled to begin tonight at 9:00 PM for traffic switching and culvert installation between Arrowood Place and Nacogdoches Loop.

VIA Metropolitan Transit Alerts

Public transport users should be aware of several active detours due to ongoing roadworks. VIA Metropolitan Transit has confirmed the following impacts for today:

  • Route 93 (Roadrunner Express): Currently on detour between Crossroads Park & Ride and the Loop 1604 access road near La Cantera.
  • Route 7 (US 281 Stone Oak/Brooks Express): Experiencing detours near the San Antonio International Airport and Broadway.
  • Route 5 (McCullough): Detoured near North Star Mall with several stops closed along Rector and the Loop 410 access road.

Commuter Advice

For those traveling through the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange, most flyover ramps are now operational, providing some relief compared to last year's cloverleaf configuration. However, with the new Blanco Road restrictions, we recommend North Side drivers allow an extra 15 to 20 minutes for their morning commute and utilize navigation apps to track real-time bottlenecking near the US 281 interchange.
