Major Milestone at Loop 1604 and I-10 Interchange

Commuters on the North Side of San Antonio have reason to celebrate this morning, as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced the opening of the eighth and final flyover ramp at the Loop 1604 and Interstate 10 interchange. Today, Thursday, February 5, marks the debut of the ramp connecting westbound Loop 1604 to westbound I-10. Drivers can now access this high-speed flyover just past Lockhill Selma Road, providing a direct connection to I-10 past La Cantera Boulevard.

This opening signifies a major turning point for the $1.4 billion Loop 1604 North Expansion Project. While the five-level interchange is now functionally complete with all eight flyovers operational, commuters should remain cautious. Crews will continue lower-level infrastructure work and frontage road repairs in the vicinity. The overall intersection project is approximately 70 percent complete, and while the new ramps will significantly reduce long-term travel times, intermittent lane shifts may still occur as finishing touches are applied to the ground-level roundabouts.

I-35 NEX Construction and Lane Closures

Drivers traveling through the Northeast Side should prepare for ongoing congestion associated with the I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) project. Construction is heavily active between North Walters Street and FM 1103. Specifically for today, commuters should be aware of a scheduled right lane closure on northbound I-35 over the Frio River starting late this afternoon. This work is part of essential bridge joint maintenance and is expected to impact the evening rush hour.

The I-35 NEX Central project remains in a high-intensity phase, with elevated lane construction causing narrowed lanes and reduced speed limits through Live Oak and Selma. Commuters are advised to add an extra 15 to 20 minutes to their travel time during peak morning and afternoon hours.

VIA Metropolitan Transit Service Alerts

VIA Metropolitan Transit has issued several service alerts for bus riders today due to ongoing roadworks. The following routes are currently operating on detours:

  • Route 5 (McCullough): Northbound service is detoured due to construction. There is currently no service at stops between the North Star Transit Center and the NE Loop 410 East access road at McCullough.
  • Route 97 (West Avenue): Construction on the North Side has forced a detour between NW Military Highway and De Zavala Road. Stops along De Zavala, west of NW Military, are temporarily closed.
  • Route 22 and 524: These routes continue to see minor adjustments following recent infrastructure improvements downtown.

Passengers are encouraged to check the VIA GoMobile+ app for real-time arrival adjustments, as construction-related traffic can cause cascading delays across the network.

Commuter Safety Tips

With the opening of the new flyover, traffic patterns at the Loop 1604/I-10 interchange will shift. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to new signage and avoid last-minute lane changes. In construction zones, particularly along I-35, remember that fines double when workers are present. Stay alert, put away distractions, and maintain a safe following distance to ensure a smooth commute for everyone in the Alamo City.
