Full Closure on I-10 Eastbound and Rodeo Events to Drive Delays Today
Significant Closure on I-10 Eastbound Starting Early Thursday
Commuters heading east out of San Antonio this morning should prepare for a major disruption. Starting at 5:00 AM today, Thursday, February 26, 2026, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has implemented a full closure of the IH-10 eastbound mainlanes. This closure stretches from the FM 1518 exit ramp to the Zuehl entrance ramp. Crews are working to move, reset, and remove single-slope barriers, weather permitting. Traffic is being diverted to the frontage roads, and significant delays are expected during the morning rush hour. Motorists are advised to allow for at least 20 to 30 minutes of extra travel time or seek alternative routes such as US-90.
I-35 NEX and Loop 1604 Expansion Updates
The I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) project continues to impact lane availability. Commuters will encounter a long-term, 24/7 left-lane closure on the southbound frontage road of I-35 from Forum Parkway to Old Austin Road. Additionally, a right-lane closure remains in effect on the I-35 southbound mainlanes between Olympia Parkway and the Loop 1604 interchange. On the city's North Side, the Loop 1604 North Expansion is seeing active construction at the interchange with IH-10 East, specifically affecting the direct connectors. Expect narrowed lanes and frequent traffic switches throughout the day.
VIA Metropolitan Transit Detours and Downtown Work
Public transit riders should be aware of several active detours affecting major routes today:
- Route 7 (US 281 Stone Oak/Brooks Express): Construction has forced a detour that suspends service from Navarro & Pecan to the San Antonio International Airport and from the Brooks Transit Center to City Base Landing.
- Route 5 (McCullough): A detour is in effect near North Star Mall, with the North Star Transit Center stop currently closed.
- VIA Rapid Green Line: Utility work and infrastructure improvements are active along San Pedro Avenue. Expect intermittent lane and sidewalk closures between the airport and downtown.
In the downtown area, South Alamo Street remains restricted from Market Street to East Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard, and drivers should anticipate slow-moving traffic near the Zona Cultural streets due to ongoing streetscape projects.
Rodeo Traffic Alert: Frost Bank Center
Heavy traffic is anticipated this evening around the Frost Bank Center as the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo continues. Today features the Semi-Finals 1 followed by a performance by Sheryl Crow. Expect high vehicle volumes and pedestrian activity on I-410, I-35, and East Houston Street starting as early as 4:00 PM. Local law enforcement will be on-site to assist with traffic flow, but parking areas will fill quickly.
