Morning Commute Overview

San Antonio commuters should prepare for a busy Monday morning on the roads this February 2, 2026. While the weather has stabilized following last week's wintry mix, major infrastructure projects across the city have resumed full activity, bringing several significant lane closures to the northern and eastern corridors. Major arteries including Loop 1604 and I-35 are expected to see the heaviest congestion.

Loop 1604 North Expansion Impacts

The most substantial impacts today are located along the Loop 1604 North Expansion project. On the Northwest Side, crews have implemented a terminating intersection closure at Loop 1604 and Bandera Road. This closure affects two lanes in both the northbound and southbound directions for sign installation. Additionally, milling and paving operations continue near Babcock Road. Commuters should take note of the following:

  • Eastbound Loop 1604 main lanes between Babcock Road and I-10: One alternating lane closed for paving.
  • Westbound Loop 1604 at Babcock: Alternating single lane closure in effect.
  • Loop 1604 at Bandera Road: Two lanes closed for intersection sign work.

These closures are scheduled to remain active through mid-February. North Side drivers should factor in an extra 15 to 20 minutes for their morning trip or consider using De Zavala Road as an alternate route.

I-35 Northeast Expansion and Drainage Work

On the East Side, the I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) continues to affect the commute from North Walters Street through FM 1103. Of particular note for today, Monday, February 2, site work is officially beginning at the Edgewood drop shaft. This is a critical milestone for the Drainage Tunnel and Pump Station segment of the project. While the work is concentrated near the frontage roads, commuters should be alert for heavy machinery and construction vehicles entering and exiting the right-of-way between the New Braunfels Avenue and Frost Bank Center exits.

Additional Roadwork and VIA Transit Alerts

Other notable roadwork includes a lane closure on the IH-10 eastbound frontage road near Crossroads Boulevard for riprap removal and embankment work. On the West Side, drivers on Potranco Road (FM 1957) should watch for crews near Landon Ridge, where the right lane is closed for crosswalk pavement marking installation.

VIA Metropolitan Transit reports several active detours this morning:

  • Routes 3 and 4: Detours are in place near San Antonio College due to recent activity near San Pedro and Ashby; several stops are currently closed.
  • Routes 5 and 7: Ongoing construction detours continue to affect service near Navarro and Pecan Streets downtown.
  • Routes 22 and 524: Service remains adjusted in some areas following recent weather-related detours.

Public transport riders are encouraged to check the VIA mobile app for real-time schedule adjustments before heading to their stops.
