San Antonio Traffic and Commute Update: Tuesday, February 3, 2026

Good morning, San Antonio. Commuters should prepare for a sluggish Tuesday morning drive across the city. Following the wintry storm that brought sleet and ice to Central Texas late last week, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has confirmed that several construction-related closures have been extended through mid-February to account for weather-related delays. If you are heading out early, expect heavy congestion on the North Side and along the Northeast corridor.

Loop 1604 North Expansion Progress

The massive Loop 1604 North Expansion remains the primary source of delays for North Side drivers. Currently, Segment 3, which stretches from I-10 to US 281, is reported at 93% completion. While the finish line is in sight for this segment, the interchange at I-10 is still a major bottleneck. Phase 2 of the interchange project is approximately 69% complete and is not expected to reach finalization until late 2027. Drivers should watch for the following specific disruptions today:

  • Lookout Road: Periodic nightly closures of the westbound mainlanes of Loop 1604 near Lookout Road continue for essential bridge deck work. These closures are scheduled to recur through March 2026.
  • I-10 Interchange: Expect lane shifts and reduced speeds as crews continue work on the remaining flyover ramps, which are slated to open incrementally throughout the year.
  • Redland Road to Judson Road: Work on Phase 5 is currently in its early stages (26% complete), leading to frequent shoulder closures and construction vehicle movement.

I-35 NEX and Northeast Side Alerts

The I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) Central project is also heavily impacting daily travel. This project, which will eventually add elevated lanes to the interstate, is roughly 50% complete with a target end date of late 2027. In the wake of the recent winter storm, TxDOT officials have cautioned that median reconstruction and drainage work between Walzem Road and Petroleum Drive may cause unexpected lane narrows today as crews resume their full schedule.

Public Transport and VIA Metropolitan Transit

VIA Metropolitan Transit reports that most regular routes are operating on a standard weekday schedule. However, passengers using routes near the new VIA Rapid Green Line construction should account for an additional 10 to 15 minutes of travel time due to street-level work. Riders are encouraged to check the VIA GoMobile+ app for real-time bus locations and service alerts that may be triggered by ongoing highway construction.

Commuter Safety Tips

With temperatures remaining low this morning, please keep a safe following distance. Construction zones on Loop 1604 are particularly narrow near the Bitters Road and Rogers Ranch exits. Stay alert for digital message boards which will provide the most current information on lane closures and traffic shifts throughout the day.
