Hotel Emma chef Geronimo Lopez to leave Pearl for Food Bank role amid district transitions

A high-profile culinary departure at the center of Pearl
San Antonio’s Pearl district is preparing for another prominent change in its food-and-hospitality lineup: Hotel Emma executive chef Geronimo Lopez is set to leave his post on Saturday, January 24, 2026. Lopez will move to a leadership role at the San Antonio Food Bank, where he is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 26, as vice president for culinary operations.
At Hotel Emma, Lopez has overseen the hotel’s primary dining and beverage venues, including Supper, Larder and Sternewirth. Hotel Emma has said it will announce a new executive chef, but has not yet identified a successor.
From Pearl restaurant operator to citywide nonprofit operations
Lopez is widely associated with the Pearl’s modern culinary identity through Botika, the Peruvian-Asian concept he led at the development for years. Botika announced its closure in July 2024 after roughly eight years of service at the Pearl. Lopez later took the executive chef position at Hotel Emma in September 2024, placing him in one of the district’s most visible operational roles.
The move to the Food Bank shifts his work from hospitality to institutional-scale culinary operations tied to hunger relief. The Food Bank position, by title and scope, signals responsibility beyond a single venue, with oversight expected to extend to food programs and related operations.
Part of a broader sequence of changes at the Pearl
Lopez’s departure comes as Pearl continues to navigate a period of turnover that has included both leadership changes and restaurant exits. Pearl CEO Mesha Millsap stepped down effective December 31, 2025, ending an 18-year tenure with owner Silver Ventures and roughly four years in the CEO role. Pearl has said existing leadership will continue managing operations while a new CEO is sought.
On the restaurant side, several high-profile concepts have recently closed or announced closures. Cured, the long-running restaurant opened by chef Steve McHugh in late 2013, ended service on Sunday, January 4, 2026, after the business chose not to renew its lease. Carriqui, located in the historic Boehler’s Liberty Saloon building, closed on October 19, 2025. Full Goods Diner, a brunch-focused operation at the Pearl, is set to close on December 31, 2025, after three years.
