Institute of Texan Cultures to reopen January 29 in Frost Tower, marking major downtown relocation

A long-anticipated return in a smaller, redesigned setting
The Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) is scheduled to reopen to the public on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026, in a new downtown location inside the Frost Tower at 111 W. Houston St., near the intersection with Camaron Street. The reopening follows a prolonged closure tied to the museum’s departure from its longtime Hemisfair home and a multi-step move designed to keep the collection accessible while long-term plans continue to take shape.
The Frost Tower space is positioned as a temporary museum home for roughly five years. The shift represents a significant change in scale and presentation from the former Hemisfair building, which operated for decades as both a museum and a familiar field-trip destination for local students.
What visitors will see: “Common Threads” and a rotating exhibit program
The reopened museum’s main gallery, titled “Common Threads,” is structured around four themes: home and family life; heritage and traditions; arts and culture; and community celebrations. The redesigned approach incorporates multimedia elements and interactive stations aimed at helping visitors explore objects and stories in greater depth, including the role of migration, craftsmanship, resources, and local traditions in shaping Texas communities.
In addition to the main gallery, the museum’s traveling exhibition space is set to begin with “Mumentous®: The Upsizing of a Texas Tradition,” a show focused on the evolution of the Texas high school homecoming mum. The exhibit is scheduled to run from opening day through March 15, 2026.
Preserving continuity with the former museum
Several high-profile artifacts associated with the institution’s earlier era are part of the new installation, including a neon Texas flag preserved from the former Texas Pavilion. The new space also incorporates benches crafted from granite previously used at the Pavilion’s entrance, signaling an effort to carry forward recognizable elements even as the museum’s footprint and exhibit design shift.
Visitors entering the museum will also encounter a large custom mural titled “Texas Tapestry: Patterns of Belonging,” designed to reflect the state’s cultural variety through motifs inspired by textiles, native plants, and traditional patterns.
Hours, admission, and opening-week access
The ITC’s regular public operating schedule is set for Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with Wednesdays reserved for school field trips and the museum closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Admission is scheduled to be free during opening week, Jan. 29 through Feb. 1. Regular pricing is set to begin on Thursday, Feb. 5, with admission listed at $10 for adults; $5 for youth ages 5–17; $5 for seniors 65+ and military personnel with ID; and free for children under 5 and UTSA faculty, staff, and students with ID.
