Morning Commute Overview

Commuters in San Antonio should prepare for a busy Tuesday morning as several new and resuming construction projects take effect today, February 17, 2026. While the major arteries remain open, specific lane closures on I-35 and Wurzbach Road are expected to cause localized delays during the morning and afternoon rush hours. Drivers are encouraged to plan for an extra 10 to 15 minutes of travel time, particularly when approaching the downtown area or the Northwest side.

Major Highway and Roadwork Alerts

  • I-35 Downtown: Following a brief holiday break, TxDOT crews are resuming bridge joint work on Interstate 35. Starting at 5:00 a.m. this morning, alternating lane closures will be in effect on the northbound lanes of I-35 between the I-10 and I-37 interchanges near the Pearl district. These closures are expected to persist throughout the day, impacting those heading toward the Northeast Side from downtown.
  • Wurzbach Road at IH-10: A new utility project begins today at the intersection of Wurzbach Road and IH-10. The right lane of Wurzbach Road will be closed from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to allow CPS Energy crews to perform essential pole replacements. This daily closure is scheduled to continue through February 26, impacting shoppers and commuters in the busy medical center and retail corridor.
  • I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX): Standard construction activities for the I-35 NEX project continue on the Northeast Side. Drivers should expect heavy equipment and narrowed lanes between North Walters Street and FM 1103. The morning and evening peak hours remain the most congested periods for this 20-mile stretch.

VIA Metropolitan Transit Updates

Public transit users should be aware of active construction along the upcoming VIA Rapid Green Line corridor. Intermittent lane and sidewalk closures are currently affecting segments of San Pedro Avenue and St. Mary’s Street. While bus service remains active, localized detours may cause minor schedule shifts for routes 5, 20, and 22.

Additionally, VIA is hosting an informational pop-up event today at the Kel-Lac Transit Center (7183 Highway 90 W.). Staff will be available from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and again from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to discuss proposed service improvements scheduled for later this year. Commuters are encouraged to stop by to provide feedback on route realignments and frequency changes.

Commuter Advice

With the resumption of bridge work near the Pearl and new utility work on Wurzbach, the best practice for Tuesday is to utilize navigation apps to monitor real-time bottlenecking. If your route involves the I-35/I-10 interchange downtown, consider using the lower levels where available or seeking alternative surface streets like San Pedro or Broadway to bypass the heaviest congestion points.
