Major Closures at Loop 1604 Interchange and Heavy Rodeo Traffic Expected Today

Sunday Traffic Overview
As we head into the middle of the President’s Day holiday weekend, San Antonio drivers should prepare for significant disruptions across the city's major arteries. Today, Sunday, February 15, 2026, traffic patterns are being heavily influenced by two major factors: the ongoing multi-billion dollar highway expansion projects and the peak of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo season. While Sunday mornings are typically quiet, the combination of fairground visitors and active construction zones will make certain corridors difficult to navigate by midday.
Loop 1604 and I-10 Interchange Closures
The most substantial impact for commuters remains at the far North Side interchange of Loop 1604 and Interstate 10. As part of the Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, TxDOT has implemented several weekend-long closures that remain in effect until 5 a.m. Monday. Drivers should expect the following:
- Frontage Road Closures: The frontage roads for both eastbound Loop 1604 and westbound I-10 at the interchange are closed.
- La Cantera Parkway: The intersection of I-10 and La Cantera Parkway is subject to nightly closures. While it may open during the day, expect heavy congestion and law enforcement directing traffic through detours in the retail district.
- Ramp Disruptions: Alternating lane closures are in place on the eastbound Loop 1604 frontage road between Valero Way and the I-10 interchange.
Rodeo Traffic at Frost Bank Center
The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo is in full swing at the Frost Bank Center and Freeman Coliseum. Today features high-profile performances by Pat Green at noon and Brad Paisley at 7:30 p.m., which will create surges of heavy traffic on I-10 East and I-35 on the East Side. Congestion is expected to peak between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and again from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Travelers not attending the rodeo are advised to use I-410 as an alternate route to avoid the Coliseum area.
Interstate 35 and Downtown Alerts
Commuters moving through the downtown core or the Northeast Side should be aware of specific I-35 restrictions:
- Downtown Lower Level: The northbound lower level of I-35 remains closed from I-10 to I-37 for bridge joint repairs. All traffic is being diverted to the upper level.
- Schertz/Northeast Side: Rerouting is in effect for the eastbound lanes of Loop 1604 between Nacogdoches Road and Ikea-RBFCU Parkway. Drivers are being forced onto the bypass ramps in this section until early Monday morning.
Public Transit and VIA Alerts
VIA Metropolitan Transit continues to provide Park & Ride services for the Rodeo, which is highly recommended to avoid parking headaches. However, several regular routes are currently on detour due to construction, including Route 7 (US 281 Stone Oak Express), Route 14 (Perrin Beitel), and Route 5 (McCullough) near North Star Mall. Passengers should check their specific route status via the VIA goMobile+ app before heading out.
