Morning Commute Overview

San Antonio drivers are facing a challenging Wednesday morning commute this January 21, 2026. A major incident on the city's northwest side has snarled traffic for those heading toward the Hill Country, while ongoing multi-year expansion projects continue to dictate the flow of traffic on our major arteries. Commuters are advised to allow for an extra 20 to 30 minutes of travel time, particularly on the I-10 and Loop 1604 corridors.

Emergency Alert: I-10 West Rollover

The most significant disruption this morning involves an 18-wheeler rollover crash on I-10 West heading toward Fredericksburg. Authorities have closed sections of the highway near Boerne to facilitate the removal of the vehicle and debris. This incident has created a major bottleneck, with traffic stalling for several miles. Drivers traveling toward Leon Springs or Boerne should consider using Ralph Fair Road or Highway 46 as alternate routes until the scene is cleared.

Scheduled Roadworks and Lane Closures

In addition to morning incidents, the Texas Department of Transportation has scheduled utility work that will impact the afternoon drive. Starting at 4:00 PM today, a right lane closure is expected at 5508 Grissom Road Westbound. Crews will be installing a new utility pole for CPS Energy. This work is weather-permitting and is expected to slow traffic near the intersection throughout the evening rush hour.

Major Project Updates: I-35 and Loop 1604

Construction crews remain active across the city's primary loops and interstates as the massive expansion projects of the mid-2020s move toward their final phases:

  • I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX): Construction on the elevated lanes between North Walters Street and FM 1103 continues. Expect heavy equipment and narrowed lanes on the mainlanes between North Loop 410 and the Forum.
  • Loop 1604 North Expansion: Work on Segment 3, stretching from I-10 to US 281, is nearing its projected spring completion. While many flyover ramps at the I-10 interchange are now operational, localized lane closures for final paving and signage installation remain a daily occurrence.
  • US Highway 90: Following the recent contract award for the expansion between I-410 and SH 211, initial utility relocation and site preparation are now visible, affecting shoulder traffic in Far West Bexar County.

Public Transport and VIA Updates

For those looking to avoid highway congestion, VIA Metropolitan Transit has implemented several service improvements this month. As of January 1, 2026, the new 1/8th-cent sales tax for the Advanced Transportation District has officially gone into effect, funding increased frequency on several key routes. Riders should note that construction for the new Eastside Transit Center near Loop 410 is ongoing, though bus schedules for Route 25 remain largely unaffected by the work site.
