Sunday Commute Overview

San Antonio drivers should prepare for a challenging Sunday on the roads this March 1, 2026. A combination of the massive "Run the Alamo" marathon downtown and critical bridge work on major interstate corridors is expected to create significant bottlenecks. Whether you are heading to church, the San Antonio Home + Garden Show, or navigating the North Side, plan for extra travel time and consider alternative routes.

Downtown Alert: 'Run the Alamo' Marathon

The final day of the "Run the Alamo" race series is underway today. Expect heavy congestion and numerous rolling closures throughout the downtown area and surrounding neighborhoods as participants complete the Full and Half Marathons. Major impacts include:

  • Significant delays near the Alamo and Market Square areas.
  • Intermittent closures along the route through historic districts and the downtown loop.
  • Higher pedestrian volume near the Alamodome, which is also hosting the final day of the Home + Garden Show.

Major Construction: Loop 1604 & I-10 Interchange

The North Side remains a primary construction zone as part of the Loop 1604 North Expansion Project. TxDOT has confirmed that several major closures remain in effect until 5:00 AM Monday morning:

  • Full closure of the Loop 1604 Westbound main lanes from the I-10 interchange to the entrance ramp after Babcock Road.
  • Closure of flyover ramps at the I-10/Loop 1604 interchange, specifically connecting Eastbound and Westbound I-10 to Westbound Loop 1604.
  • A long-term closure at the intersection of I-10 and La Cantera Parkway will begin tonight at 10:00 PM, impacting overnight shoppers and workers in the Rim area.

I-35 NEX and Northeast Side Closures

Commuters on the Northeast Side will face disruptions due to the I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) project. The most significant impact today is the closure of the I-35 Northbound main lanes at the Loop 410 interchange. This closure is scheduled for most of the day Sunday to facilitate essential bridge work. Additionally, starting at 9:00 PM tonight, lane closures will begin on I-35 Northbound at Walters Street and Binz-Engleman Road for detour construction.

VIA Metropolitan Transit Updates

Due to the ongoing construction and downtown events, several VIA bus routes are currently operating on detours. Riders should check for service alerts if they use the following routes:

  • Route 36 (South Presa) and Route 8 (North St. Mary's) are impacted by downtown construction and event traffic.
  • Route 97 (West Avenue) and Route 14 (Perrin Beitel) continue to face detours related to long-term infrastructure improvements.
  • Express routes using the I-35 and US 281 corridors may experience delays proportional to highway congestion.
