Commuter Alert for Wednesday, February 4, 2026

San Antonio commuters should prepare for significant mid-week disruptions as several major construction projects reach critical phases today. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has issued several alerts for Wednesday, February 4, impacting key arteries including I-10, I-35, and Loop 1604. While morning rush hour started with typical congestion on the North Side, specific lane closures and scheduled work will complicate the afternoon drive and tonight's commute.

Full Closure on I-10 Westbound

The most substantial impact today is the scheduled full closure of the I-10 Westbound main lanes between SH 123 and Walnut Branch Creek. This closure is necessary for urgent pavement repairs and is expected to remain in effect until 4:00 PM today. Drivers traveling into San Antonio from the east should expect significant delays and are encouraged to seek alternate routes, such as US 90, to avoid the bottleneck near Seguin. Additionally, on the West Side, a daytime closure is in effect on SH-151 eastbound at the Cable Ranch off-ramp. Crews are working to pour concrete for mowstrips, and the single right lane will remain closed until approximately 3:00 PM.

Loop 1604 and North Side Construction

The massive $1.4 billion Loop 1604 North Expansion project continues to dominate traffic patterns on the North Side. For those traveling near the Rim and the Shops at La Cantera, be advised that the nightly closure of La Cantera Parkway where it dips under I-10 is ongoing. This intersection, including the U-turn lanes, will be shut down starting at 10:00 PM tonight and will reopen by 5:00 AM tomorrow. This work is part of the bridge construction for the new "Texas stack" interchange connecting Loop 1604 and I-10.

Downtown and I-35 Updates

Commuters heading through the downtown core should watch for alternating lane closures on the northbound lanes of I-35. These closures are concentrated between the I-10 and I-37 interchange near the Pearl District. TxDOT crews are performing bridge joint work, which is expected to cause intermittent slowing throughout the day. This project is part of a larger maintenance effort slated to continue through the spring of 2026.

Public Transit and Travel Tips

VIA Metropolitan Transit has confirmed that all regular routes are operational today, though buses traveling through the I-10/UTSA area may experience delays due to residual congestion from yesterday's major accidents in the corridor. VIA is also preparing for a series of public hearings regarding service improvements starting next week; however, no pop-up events are scheduled for today, February 4. Commuters are advised to utilize real-time traffic apps and allow an extra 15 to 20 minutes for travel along the Loop 1604 and I-35 corridors during the evening peak.
