Major Sunday Closures: I-35 Northbound at Loop 410 and I-410 Bridge Work Disrupt Sunday Commute

Significant Highway Closures in Northeast San Antonio
Commuters and weekend travelers in San Antonio should prepare for significant disruptions today, Sunday, February 1, 2026, as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) continues major work on the I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) project. The most notable impact involves the total closure of the northbound Interstate 35 main lanes at the Loop 410 interchange. This closure is necessary for bridge construction as part of the ongoing effort to add elevated express lanes to the corridor. Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes such as the Loop 410 frontage roads or Wurzbach Parkway to bypass the heavy congestion expected near the interchange.
I-410 Girder Placement and Frontage Road Restrictions
Further east, bridge work is also affecting Loop 410. Starting at 5:00 AM this morning, crews began staging and placing large concrete girders for the new bridge structures. This operation has led to the closure of the northbound frontage road of I-35 between the Southbound Loop 410 Exit 30 and Binz Engleman Road. Traffic is currently being diverted to the Rittiman Road exit. Additionally, one to two main lanes of I-35 in both directions between Walzem Road and Petroleum Drive are subject to alternating closures through Monday morning at 5:00 AM for median reconstruction. While at least one lane remains open in each direction, significant delays are reported in the Windcrest and Northeast San Antonio areas.
Loop 1604 North Expansion and Austin Corridor Updates
On the city’s North Side, the Loop 1604 North Expansion project is nearing a major milestone, with Phase 3 (from I-10 to US 281) now 92% complete. While most daytime traffic remains fluid, overnight lane shifts and ramp closures are scheduled to resume this evening at 9:00 PM. Drivers traveling between San Antonio and Austin should be aware of permanent changes that went into effect today: the northbound I-35 Riverside Drive exit (233) and the Holly Street entrance and exit ramps in downtown Austin have been closed permanently. Local detours via the Woodland Avenue or Cesar Chavez Street exits are now in place to accommodate the reconstruction of the Lady Bird Lake bridge.
Public Transport and Transit Alerts
VIA Metropolitan Transit is reporting several active detours due to residual weather conditions and ongoing roadworks. Commuters using the following routes should check for updated stop locations:
- Route 22 (Hays): Detours are active for westbound service between Walters and Lockhart.
- Route 524 (General McMullen Frequent): Weather-related detours are impacting service near Southwest Military Drive and Bynum.
- Route 619 (Kel-Lac / Port SA): No service is currently available from Gen. Hudnell to Quintana Road.
VIA is also in the process of implementing its "Better Bus Plan," with frequency improvements for weekend routes like the 502 and 21 expected later this spring. For now, riders are advised to allow extra travel time due to the major highway construction impacting surface street flow near the I-35 and Loop 410 interchanges.
