What happened

A man believed to be in his 40s was taken to a hospital late Monday night after being struck during a drive-by shooting outside a West Side home, San Antonio police said.

Officers were called at about 11:50 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, to a residence in the 100 block of Segura Street, in the area near Southwest 38th Street and Old Highway 90. Police said the man was standing under a carport when a dark-colored vehicle drove past and someone inside fired multiple shots.

Injuries and medical response

Police said one round ricocheted off the victim’s vehicle and struck him in the stomach area. Authorities said the bullet did not penetrate his skin, and the man was transported to a hospital as a precaution. No updated condition was released early Tuesday.

What investigators know — and what they don’t

Police did not immediately provide additional identifying information about the suspected vehicle beyond describing it as dark-colored. A suspect description was not released.

Investigators have not publicly identified a motive, and police did not indicate whether the victim was targeted or whether any property damage beyond the vehicle strike had been documented.

Pattern of ongoing drive-by investigations on the West Side

The Segura Street shooting is the latest in a series of West Side cases investigated as drive-by incidents in recent months, reflecting the challenges police face when suspects flee quickly and descriptions are limited. In multiple recent investigations citywide, police have reported that suspects left the scene before officers arrived, leaving cases to rely on physical evidence, witness accounts, and any available video footage from nearby homes or businesses.

How residents can help

Police typically ask anyone who may have seen the vehicle, heard gunfire, or captured relevant footage to report what they know. In cases involving shots fired from a passing vehicle, investigators often seek:

  • Descriptions of the car’s make, model, and direction of travel
  • Any distinguishing damage, decals, or missing parts
  • Doorbell camera, home security, or business surveillance video covering nearby streets
  • Names of potential witnesses who may have left the area before officers arrived

The shooting was reported shortly before midnight Monday, Jan. 19, at a home on Segura Street on San Antonio’s West Side.

The investigation remained active Tuesday morning, and police had not announced any arrests.
