Morning Commute Overview

As San Antonio begins the second full week of February 2026, drivers can expect a mix of improved connectivity and ongoing construction bottlenecks. While recent milestones at major interchanges are providing relief, Monday morning traffic is expected to be heavy on the North and Northeast sides. Commuters should allow an extra 15 to 20 minutes for travel during the peak hours of 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM.

Loop 1604 and I-10 Interchange Update

Following a busy weekend of roadworks, the Northwest side sees a significant change in traffic patterns. The eighth and final flyover ramp at the Loop 1604 and Interstate 10 interchange officially opened to traffic last week, now providing a direct connection from westbound Loop 1604 to westbound I-10. This completion is expected to ease some of the weaving issues near La Cantera and The Rim.

However, despite the ramp opening, crews are still active on the lower levels. Commuters should be aware of the following:

  • Frontage road closures at the interchange that were in place over the weekend are scheduled to reopen by 5:00 AM this morning, but residual debris and barrier adjustments may cause slow-downs.
  • Nightly lane shifts remain active near Vance Jackson Road as crews continue drainage work beneath the new flyovers.
  • Expect heavy volume at the intersection of Loop 1604 and NW Military Highway where expansion work continues to narrow the available lane width.

I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) Projects

The I-35 NEX Central project is in a high-intensity phase this month. For those traveling between Windcrest and Schertz, the following conditions apply:

  • Elevated lane construction is particularly active near the I-410 North interchange. Watch for narrowed main lanes and a reduced speed limit of 55 MPH.
  • Be prepared for congestion on the northbound I-35 access roads between Walzem Road and Weidner Road due to utility relocation and column placement.

Pre-Rodeo Traffic Staging

While the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo officially begins later this week on February 12, staging and livestock arrivals are already impacting the East Side. Expect increased heavy-vehicle traffic near the Frost Bank Center and Freeman Coliseum fairgrounds. Key areas of concern include East Houston Street and AT&T Center Parkway, where livestock trailers and vendors are beginning to arrive for the junior shows. Drivers are advised to use I-37 as an alternative to avoid the immediate vicinity of the fairgrounds.

VIA Metropolitan Transit Alerts

VIA is operating on a standard Monday schedule. However, routes 603 and 501 may experience minor delays due to the ongoing expansion work on the Loop 1604 frontage roads. Passengers utilizing the VIA Link service in the Northeast zone should account for potential wait time increases as construction activity shifts along the I-35 corridor.
