What happened

A 28-year-old man was hospitalized after an early-morning shooting on San Antonio’s Northwest Side, with police saying the initial call location did not match where the gunfire appears to have occurred.

Officers responded at about 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, 2026, to a report of a shooting in the 1000 block of Vance Jackson Road. At the scene, police found the man lying on a sidewalk in a parking lot with a gunshot wound to the upper body.

How investigators reconstructed the timeline

During the initial investigation, officers determined the shooting likely happened hours earlier and less than a mile away, in the 3600 block of Fredericksburg Road. Police treated the Vance Jackson location as the place where the wounded man was found, not necessarily where the shooting took place.

The victim told officers he had been involved in an altercation with a woman at the Fredericksburg Road location and that an unknown man shot him during or after that dispute. Police said the victim could not provide identifying information about either the woman or the shooter.

Victim’s condition and investigation status

The man was transported to a local hospital. Police described his injuries as not life-threatening.

As of the latest available public information from the initial report, no suspect had been identified and no arrest had been announced. The case remains under investigation.

Why the location matters

When shootings are reported, the first address given to police can reflect where a caller saw a person injured or where someone sought help, rather than where the gun was fired. Investigators typically work to establish:

  • the most likely origin point of the shooting, based on witness accounts and any physical evidence;
  • the route the victim may have taken between locations;
  • whether any surveillance video captures the altercation or the moments afterward.

What remains unknown

Authorities have not released details about a possible motive, the relationship—if any—between the people described by the victim, or whether any weapon has been recovered. Police have also not said whether additional witnesses have been located.

Anyone with information about the shooting is generally urged to contact law enforcement so investigators can corroborate timelines, identify involved individuals, and secure any available video before it is overwritten.
