Emergency Cold Weather Response: Resilience Hubs to Open
The City of San Antonio has announced the opening of six overnight Resilience Hubs to assist residents during the severe cold front and precipitation forecast for this weekend. These hubs will officially open on Saturday, January 24, at 6:00 p.m. and will remain operational until noon on Monday, January 26. The facilities are designed to provide a warm, safe environment with access to power, device charging, and free Wi-Fi.
- Hub Locations: Copernicus Community Center, Garza Community Center, Miller’s Pond Community Center, Normoyle Community Center, Northeast Senior Center, and Southside Lions Senior Center.
- Transportation: VIA Metropolitan Transit will provide fare-free travel to and from these locations for anyone seeking shelter from the cold.
- Pet Safety: Kennels will be available at these sites in a dedicated area for residents traveling with pets.
Urgent Health Advisories: Flu Spike and Screwworm Awareness
The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District has reported a significant surge in influenza activity, with local positivity rates climbing to 17.74%. Health officials urge residents to seek vaccinations immediately, noting that the current season is seeing a high volume of pediatric cases and hospitalizations. Additionally, the CDC has issued a nationwide health advisory regarding New World screwworm cases detected near the Texas border. While no U.S. infestations have been confirmed as of January 23, local veterinarians and residents are asked to report any suspicious parasitic activity in livestock or pets.
City Council Updates: Federal Agency Cooperation and Task Force Leadership
Following a special session held on January 22, the City Council is continuing its review of the San Antonio Police Department’s protocols regarding cooperation with federal immigration agencies. The session included testimony from over 180 residents and focused on demands for greater transparency in local law enforcement. In other administrative news, District 9 Councilwoman Misty Spears has been appointed as Tri-Chair of the Military Transformation Task Force (MTTF), where she will help lead regional efforts to reinforce San Antonio’s status as Military City, USA®.
