Major Downtown I-35 Closure Begins

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced a significant, weeks-long closure affecting downtown commuters. Starting today, Saturday, February 21, 2026, the lower-level mainlanes of I-35 South between Interstate 37 and Interstate 10 will be closed for bridge repair work. This closure is expected to remain in place through mid-March. While the upper-level mainlanes will remain open, drivers are strongly urged to seek alternate routes to avoid anticipated traffic delays. The $25.9 million project aims to increase safety along the corridor by repairing bridge joints and deck surfaces.

Loop 1604 Expansion and I-10 Interchanges

Construction on the Loop 1604 North Expansion project continues this weekend with several major disruptions. Westbound lanes of Loop 1604 between the Stone Oak Parkway exit ramp and the subsequent entrance ramp will be closed until 5:00 p.m. today. Additionally, full closures are in effect at the I-10 and Loop 1604 interchange, including several flyover ramps, until 5:00 a.m. Monday. Motorists should expect increased congestion on the North Side and are encouraged to use navigation apps for real-time detour information.

Red Flag Warning and Fire Safety Advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the San Antonio area for Saturday, February 21. Dry conditions, low humidity, and gusty winds following a morning cold front have created a critical risk for rapid fire spread. The City of San Antonio advises all residents to avoid outdoor burning and to exercise extreme caution with cigarettes or equipment that could produce sparks. Fire crews are on high alert throughout the county to respond to potential brush fires.

Health Alert: High Flu Activity and Measles Monitoring

The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District reports that flu activity in Bexar County remains at high levels, with the H3N2 variant driving a surge in emergency room visits. Residents are encouraged to seek vaccination if they have not already done so this season. Additionally, health officials continue to monitor regional reports of measles cases. The community is reminded to practice good hygiene and stay home if they exhibit symptoms of respiratory illness or unexplained rashes.

A special session of the San Antonio City Council is scheduled for Monday, February 23, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. The meeting was called following a formal request from five council members to discuss the potential censure of Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones regarding alleged code of conduct violations. This session is part of an ongoing third-party investigation process. The meeting will be held at the City Council Chambers and is open to the public.
