Post-Freeze Service Updates and Operations
Following the severe cold weather event earlier this week, the City of San Antonio officially resumed regular operations on Tuesday, January 27. While most non-essential facilities have reopened, the following updates remain in effect for Wednesday, January 28:
- Emergency Shelters: Overnight warming centers and shelter options for unsheltered neighbors concluded their extended operations on Tuesday night. Residents in need of housing resources are encouraged to contact 311.
- Waste Collection: Solid waste services have returned to their regular schedule. Residents are advised to place bins at the curb on their designated day.
- Road Conditions: Public Works continues to monitor bridge surfaces and overpasses for lingering ice patches, though rising temperatures have significantly improved driving conditions across the city.
Public Health Advisory: Respiratory Illness Surge
The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District has issued an advisory regarding "very high" levels of influenza-like activity across Bexar County. Health officials report that emergency room visits for respiratory issues remain elevated. In addition to the flu, San Antonio is seeing concurrent surges in COVID-19, RSV, and seasonal Cedar Fever. Residents experiencing symptoms are urged to seek testing to ensure proper treatment, as viral infections do not respond to antibiotics. Metro Health clinics have resumed normal hours following the weather-related closures.
Aviation and Public Works Notices
San Antonio International Airport (SAT) continues its major safety upgrade project on one of its primary runways. The runway remains closed through March 6, 2026, to allow for concrete repairs and the installation of new LED lighting. Travelers should check with their airlines for potential flight schedule adjustments during this period. Additionally, the San Antonio River Authority is hosting a virtual iNaturalist training tonight, January 28, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, to prepare volunteers for the upcoming 2026 City Nature Challenge.
