Morning Commute Overview for Friday, January 23, 2026

San Antonio commuters should prepare for a heavy traffic day as several major construction projects reach critical milestones. While the morning rush hour is expected to proceed without scheduled lane closures, residual congestion from a major incident on Thursday and ongoing preparation for weekend-long shutdowns will likely slow travel times on the North and Northwest sides.

Loop 1604 North Expansion Impacts

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) continues to push forward with the Loop 1604 North Expansion. For those traveling through the Northwest Side today, please be aware of the following:

  • La Cantera Parkway & I-10: Nightly closures at the La Cantera Parkway intersection at I-10 remain in effect. These closures, which include U-turns, occur from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. and are scheduled to continue through Sunday, January 25. Drivers heading home late Friday night will need to use the signalized U-turn at the Loop 1604 interchange as a detour.
  • De Zavala to Camp Bullis: Ongoing bridge construction and concrete barrier installation on I-10 mainlanes between De Zavala Road and Camp Bullis Road may result in narrow lanes and shifted traffic patterns. While work is primarily nightly, caution is advised during daylight hours.
  • US 281 Interchange: Commuters should check for residual delays near Donella Drive and US 281 following a major multi-lane crash on Thursday afternoon that required extensive emergency response.

I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) Alerts

On the Northeast Side, the I-35 NEX Central project is significantly impacting the morning drive. Periodic nightly closures for bridge deck work are occurring on the westbound mainlanes of Loop 1604 from Lookout Road to IKEA-RBFCU Parkway. While these lanes typically reopen by 5 a.m., heavy equipment proximity to the frontage roads often causes a slow-down during the early morning transition.

VIA Metropolitan Transit Updates

Public transport users are navigating the second full week of VIA’s "Better Bus Plan," which launched on January 12. This historic expansion has adjusted schedules for 30 different routes to increase frequency. Notably:

  • Prímo 100: This high-frequency route linking downtown to the Medical Center now operates every 12 minutes during peak hours.
  • Brooks Transit Center: Phase 2 of pavement repairs is underway. Temporary bus stops are in place, so riders should allow an extra 5-10 minutes for transfers at this location.
  • Special Events: Park & Ride services are active today for fans heading to the Monster Jam events at the Alamodome.

Commuters are encouraged to use Wurzbach Parkway as an east-west alternative to Loop 1604 to avoid construction zones, and to check official transit apps for real-time bus arrivals following the recent system-wide schedule changes.
