Overnight San Antonio fires: Northeast Side family escapes bedroom blaze; Northwest apartment fire prompts evacuations

Three residential fire responses reported overnight across San Antonio area
San Antonio firefighters responded to multiple overnight residential fire calls spanning the Northeast Side, the Northwest Side area near Balcones Heights, and Hill Country Village, with occupants evacuating safely and no injuries reported in the incidents disclosed by authorities.
The first call came shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday to a home in the 4000 block of Las Cruces Street, off Thousand Oaks Drive on the city’s Northeast Side. Fire crews arrived to find a fire that began in a bedroom after a mattress caught fire. The fire was contained quickly, and the family inside the home escaped without injuries.
Vacant apartment fire near Balcones Heights led to evacuations
At about 1 a.m. Thursday, firefighters were dispatched to a separate incident at a vacant apartment in the 100 block of Williamsburg Street, near Balcones Heights on the Northwest Side area. Officials described the fire as small and contained within an interior wall, with minimal damage reported.
Even with limited fire extension, crews carried out evacuations as a precaution while they checked for spread beyond the wall cavity and ensured neighboring units were not affected by smoke or hidden fire. No injuries were reported.
Detached garage fire spread to attic in Hill Country Village
Just over an hour later, firefighters responded to a fire at a home in the 300 block of Hill Country Lane in Hill Country Village. A detached garage was reported fully engulfed when crews arrived, and the fire extended into the home’s attic. One resident evacuated safely. Authorities characterized the damage as significant.
What investigators will examine next
Fire officials said the causes of the more serious residential fires remained under investigation. In cases involving bedroom-origin fires and concealed-space fires, investigators typically evaluate potential ignition sources, electrical conditions, and the involvement of common household items, while documenting burn patterns and any evidence of fire spread through attic or wall voids.
Las Cruces Street (Northeast Side): Bedroom fire involving a mattress; contained quickly; residents exited safely.
Williamsburg Street (near Balcones Heights): Small fire in an interior wall of a vacant apartment; evacuations conducted; minimal damage.
Hill Country Lane (Hill Country Village): Detached garage fire spread to a home’s attic; significant damage; resident evacuated.
Residents are urged to treat any sign of smoke or burning odor as an emergency and to leave immediately, closing doors behind them when possible to help slow fire spread.
Officials had not released additional details on property loss estimates or the precise origin points beyond initial scene assessments. Any further findings are expected to come after investigative reviews are completed.
