Police investigate fatal hit-and-run at Northwest Side apartment complex as victim remains unidentified Tuesday

What investigators have confirmed so far
San Antonio police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run after a man was found critically injured early Tuesday morning in the Los Angeles Heights–Keystone area on the city’s Northwest Side.
Officers were dispatched at about 1:15 a.m. Feb. 17 to the Astra Apartments in the 1100 block of West Avenue following a report of an injured person in a parking lot. A witness reported that a white truck struck the man and left the scene without stopping.
Emergency medical personnel transported the victim to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said the victim had not been identified as of Tuesday and was believed to be between 35 and 40 years old.
What remains unclear
Investigators had not released a suspect description beyond the vehicle described as a white truck. Police also did not provide additional details Tuesday about the circumstances leading up to the collision, including the direction of travel, whether the victim was walking through the lot, or whether surveillance video exists.
Authorities have not announced arrests or charges, and the case remained active Tuesday as detectives worked to identify the victim and locate the driver.
Why hit-and-run cases can take time to resolve
In many hit-and-run investigations, the early timeline is shaped by three immediate needs: confirming the victim’s identity, locating and interviewing witnesses, and identifying a vehicle through physical evidence, nearby cameras, or reports of damage consistent with a collision.
Even when a vehicle color is reported, investigators typically seek corroboration through additional witness accounts, video footage, or forensic evidence from the scene.
What the public can do
Drivers who may have been in the area around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday can check dash-camera footage for a white truck or unusual activity near the apartment complex.
Residents and businesses nearby can preserve any security video from overnight hours before systems automatically overwrite recordings.
Anyone with information can contact San Antonio police through official channels to provide tips that could help identify the victim or locate the vehicle.
This story will be updated as police release additional details, including the victim’s identification and any potential suspect information.
