Public Notice: Severe Weather Operations and Municipal Service Updates

Severe Weather Alert: Emergency City Operations
In response to the current Arctic front and ongoing winter weather conditions, the City of San Antonio has enacted emergency operational changes for Monday, January 26, 2026. Municipal officials have ordered the scaling back of non-essential operations to protect public safety and reduce traffic on potentially hazardous roads. While critical services—including Police, Fire, and Public Works—remain fully operational, residents are advised of significant facility closures and meeting cancellations effective throughout the day.
Municipal Facility Closures and Service Delays
The following city services and facilities are closed to the public today, Monday, January 26:
- Public Health: All San Antonio Metro Health clinics and administrative offices are closed.
- Judicial: San Antonio Municipal Court sessions have been canceled for the day.
- Education: Pre-K 4 SA Education Centers, Head Start, and Early Head Start programs are non-operational.
- Waste Management: All Bulky Waste drop-off centers and the Household Hazardous Waste center on Culebra Road are closed. The Bitters Brush site is scheduled to operate on a two-hour delay, opening at 10 a.m.
Additionally, all official City meetings scheduled for today, including committee sessions, have been canceled. Solid Waste Services will attempt to maintain regular collection routes; however, residents should anticipate potential delays depending on local road conditions and are encouraged to leave carts out as scheduled unless otherwise notified.
Emergency Support and Warming Centers
To assist residents during this prolonged freeze, the City’s 311 Customer Service line has transitioned to 24-hour operations through Monday evening. Public libraries, parks, and senior centers remain open to serve as Resiliency Hubs and daytime warming locations. Residents needing a safe place to escape the cold are encouraged to utilize these sites or contact 311 to find the nearest available facility and check current hours of operation.
Public Health Advisory: Seasonal Illness Surge
San Antonio Metro Health has issued a high-priority advisory regarding "very high" levels of influenza and respiratory virus activity across Bexar County. Recent data indicates a significant spike in flu-related emergency room visits compared to previous years. Health officials urge the public to utilize testing to distinguish between the flu, COVID-19, and RSV, particularly as cedar fever symptoms are also prevalent throughout the region this month.
Infrastructure and Construction Notices
Essential infrastructure projects continue to move forward despite the weather. San Antonio International Airport confirms that a major runway closure remains in effect through March 6, 2026, for critical safety upgrades, including concrete repairs and LED lighting installation. In local park developments, the 2022 Bond Program project at Southside Lions Park remains in its active construction phase, with work on the new skatepark facility progressing toward a scheduled completion in early 2026.
