Emergency Alert: Winter Storm Warning and Resiliency Hubs

The City of San Antonio has issued an emergency notice regarding the ongoing winter storm and extreme cold event. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Bexar County until noon today, Sunday, January 25, 2026. Residents should prepare for dangerous travel conditions as freezing rain and ice accumulations of up to 0.2 inches have made highways and overpasses slick and hazardous. An Extreme Cold Watch will remain active through noon on Monday.

To assist vulnerable residents during this arctic blast, the City has designated several public facilities as Resiliency Hubs. While standard operations are paused, city libraries, community centers, and senior centers remain open as daytime warming locations for those who need a safe place to stay warm. Additionally, the City’s 311 customer service line has extended its operations to 24 hours a day through Monday to assist residents with weather-related inquiries and reports of non-emergency issues.

City Facility Closures and Service Adjustments

Due to the weather emergency, most non-essential City operations have been scaled back to ensure public safety. The following facilities and services are closed today, Sunday, January 25, and will remain closed through at least Monday:

  • San Antonio Municipal Court and all Metro Health clinics.
  • Bitters Brush Site and all Bulky Waste drop-off centers.
  • Household Hazardous Waste drop-off center on Culebra Road.
  • The Animal Care Services shelter (though emergency enforcement officers remain on patrol).
  • Cultural venues, including the Carver Community Cultural Center, La Villita, and Market Square offices.

Furthermore, all official City meetings scheduled for Monday, January 26, have been canceled. While Solid Waste collection is currently planned for Monday, the City warns that crews may experience significant delays or adjusted start times depending on road conditions.

Transportation and Travel Advisories

Public safety officials urge residents to avoid all unnecessary travel until temperatures rise. As of Sunday morning, a major high-severity crash has closed all westbound lanes of I-10 between Boerne Stage Road and Ralph Fair Road. Travelers with scheduled flights should verify their status before departing for the San Antonio International Airport, as dozens of Sunday flights have already been canceled due to the storm.

Public Health Advisory: Seasonal Illness Update

The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District is also monitoring a significant spike in seasonal illnesses. Flu positivity rates in Bexar County have reached 17.74%, with the "subclade K" variant being the most prevalent. Residents are reminded that cedar fever is also in high gear. Health officials recommend testing to distinguish between viral infections and seasonal allergies, as treatments differ for each.
