Recovery from Winter Weather

San Antonio commuters can expect a return to more typical traffic patterns this Wednesday, January 28, 2026, as the city continues to recover from the recent arctic blast. Following the weekend ice storm that caused widespread closures and icy conditions across Bexar County, the National Weather Service and local authorities have confirmed that most road surfaces are now clear. While early morning travelers should remain vigilant for lingering slush or debris in shaded areas, major highways have been treated and are deemed safe for standard travel speeds. Most San Antonio-area school districts and higher education institutions, including the Alamo Colleges District, have officially resumed normal schedules today.

Major Corridor Updates

Traffic is flowing freely again on Loop 410 near Old Pearsall Road. This follows a significant disruption on Tuesday morning caused by a school bus rollover involving Southwest ISD students. While several lanes were blocked for a major portion of the day to allow for investigation and vehicle recovery, TxDOT has confirmed that all southbound lanes and the off-ramp at Old Pearsall Road have been fully reopened for the Wednesday morning commute. Authorities have noted that no criminal charges are expected in relation to that incident, which was attributed to visibility issues during the storm.

Ongoing Construction and Expansion

Despite the clearing weather, long-term construction projects continue to impact local travel. The Loop 1604 North Expansion remains a primary focus for TxDOT. Commuters should prepare for the following:

  • Loop 1604 North: Ongoing mainlane and frontage road work between I-10 and SH 16 (Bandera Road). While major weekend-style closures are not scheduled for today, temporary traffic shifts and narrowed lanes are in effect.
  • Far West Side: Preliminary work has begun on the FM 471 (Culebra Road) and SH 16 corridor. This multi-year project aims to alleviate congestion in the rapidly growing neighborhood, but drivers may encounter utility crews and temporary shoulder closures.

VIA Metropolitan Transit and Airport Updates

VIA Metropolitan Transit has transitioned out of its emergency winter schedule. The fare-free program for warming centers ended earlier this week, and all routes have returned to standard operations. This month also marks the initial implementation of the "Better Bus Plan," which includes frequency improvements for high-traffic routes. Specifically, riders of the Prímo 100 linking downtown and the Medical Center can now enjoy increased service frequency. For those heading to the San Antonio International Airport (SAT), be advised that some morning arrivals have been delayed due to residual weather impacts at other regional hubs; travelers are encouraged to check their flight status before departing for the terminal.
