San Antonio International Airport adds new nonstop flights as airlines expand routes through 2025 schedules

New nonstop service broadens SAT’s route map
San Antonio International Airport (SAT) is adding multiple new nonstop routes as airlines expand their schedules for 2025, a shift that airport officials have framed as part of a broader effort to widen the region’s direct air access. The additions include new domestic links to major hubs and leisure markets, along with expanded international options to Mexico.
The new routes arrive as SAT continues planning long-term capacity upgrades, including the Terminal C development program, designed to add gates and modernize passenger facilities over the next several years.
Washington, D.C. service begins in March 2025
A notable addition is the start of daily nonstop flights between SAT and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). The service is scheduled to begin March 2, 2025, creating the first nonstop link between San Antonio and DCA and establishing a direct connection to the airport closest to downtown Washington.
The route was enabled through a federal slot-allocation process tied to new exemptions at DCA. The schedule released for the service includes a morning departure from San Antonio and an evening return from Washington, with flights operated on Airbus A321 aircraft.
Spirit expands with new and returning routes
Spirit Airlines has also expanded its SAT footprint with a series of additions timed for spring and summer travel. The airline launched nonstop service to San Juan, Puerto Rico, in early March 2025, marking the first time SAT has offered nonstop service to the Caribbean. Spirit also scheduled a new daily nonstop route to Atlanta beginning April 9, 2025.
Further growth is slated for May 2025, when Spirit is expected to resume service to Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) and add new nonstop routes to Detroit Metropolitan (DTW) and Nashville (BNA). Frequency details vary by market, with some routes launching as limited-days-per-week service.
San Antonio–Washington (DCA): daily service beginning March 2, 2025
San Antonio–San Juan (SJU): year-round service beginning in March 2025
San Antonio–Atlanta (ATL): daily service beginning April 9, 2025
Additional Spirit routes: BWI returning, plus new DTW and BNA service beginning in May 2025
Mexico connectivity grows with new Volaris routes
International options are also expanding. Volaris is scheduled to launch nonstop flights from San Antonio to Morelia (MLM) and San Luis Potosí (SLP) starting July 5, 2025. Both routes are planned three times weekly, adding two additional Mexican destinations to SAT’s network at a time when demand for cross-border travel remains a focus for the airport.
Across the 2025 schedule, the additions collectively increase nonstop options for business travel, visiting friends and relatives, and leisure trips—while placing added importance on terminal capacity, gate availability, and on-time operations as flight counts grow.
What travelers should watch next
Airline schedules remain subject to change, and travelers are advised to confirm start dates, frequencies, and baggage rules—particularly on ultra-low-cost carriers where base fares can exclude common amenities. For San Antonio, the wave of route announcements signals continued competition for seats and expanding nonstop access, even as the airport prepares for major construction intended to support future growth.
