San Antonio Missions unveil early downtown ballpark concepts as 2028 opening target and financing advance

Concept images mark a new stage in long-running plan to move the Missions downtown
The San Antonio Missions have released initial concept renderings for a proposed downtown ballpark, offering the most visible look yet at a project designed to keep Double-A affiliated baseball in the city and replace Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium, the team’s home since 1994. The concepts arrive as local governments and a newly created public authority continue to assemble land, finalize agreements and prepare a financing sequence tied to adjacent private development.
The planned venue is a roughly 4,500 fixed-seat ballpark designed for an overall capacity of about 7,500. City planning materials have described a multi-use facility intended to host Missions home games as well as tournaments and other events, positioning the stadium as an anchor within a broader redevelopment district near San Pedro Creek and Fox Tech High School.
Where the stadium would go and who would own it
The project footprint has centered on parcels near San Pedro Creek, including land controlled by public entities and a final set of property negotiations involving the San Antonio Independent School District. In 2025, SAISD approved moving forward with the sale of a key piece of land for the site. Separate actions by Bexar County have transferred property to the ballpark’s public development authority to consolidate site control for construction and financing.
The San Pedro Creek Development Authority was formed to develop, finance, own and lease the ballpark. Governance has been structured around representation from the City of San Antonio, Bexar County and the team’s ownership group and development partner.
Financing structure and conditions tied to surrounding development
The ballpark has been presented as a $160 million project with a financing plan built around a tax increment reinvestment zone and bond issuance through the development authority. Public briefings and prior votes have emphasized sequencing: bonds for stadium construction are tied to readiness milestones for surrounding private development phases, which include housing and mixed-use components planned around the venue.
Project documents and public statements have also included a cost-containment structure intended to place construction-cost overruns beyond an agreed maximum price onto the private side, rather than expanding the public commitment.
Design team and timeline
The Missions’ ownership group selected Populous as lead architect in 2025. The newly released concept renderings are an early step in translating massing and site planning into a buildable design that must also address player-facility standards required for affiliated Minor League Baseball operations.
Local planning timelines have consistently targeted an April 2028 opening. In the interim, the city has also pursued maintenance and upgrades at Wolff Stadium to support continued play while the downtown project advances.
- Proposed capacity: about 4,500 fixed seats, approximately 7,500 total
- Proposed location: near San Pedro Creek and Fox Tech High School
- Owner/landlord entity: San Pedro Creek Development Authority
- Target opening: 2028 season
The concept renderings do not finalize architectural details or financing dates; they depict a project still moving through land assembly, design development, and a bond-timing process tied to surrounding private construction.
Next steps include advancing detailed design, completing remaining property transactions, and moving toward a bond sale schedule aligned with the first phases of nearby private development that are intended to help generate the revenue stream backing the public financing plan.
