Body discovered near Loop 1604 and U.S. 281 during early-morning work activity

San Antonio police opened an investigation Thursday after construction workers reported finding a man’s body beneath a Northeast Side bridge near Loop 1604 and U.S. 281. Officers were dispatched shortly after 6:45 a.m. to the 2400 block of North Loop 1604 East, where the location appeared to be part of an active construction area.

Police said the death is being treated as suspicious and that the department’s homicide unit is investigating while detectives work to determine what happened. The man was described as appearing to be older than 50. His identity was not released Thursday morning.

What is known so far

  • Time and location: Officers were called just after 6:45 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 2026, to Loop 1604 eastbound near Gold Canyon and Redland roads, in the area of U.S. 281.

  • Initial report: The call was categorized as a report of a person who appeared injured or sick, and responders found the individual deceased at the scene.

  • Discovery: Construction workers at the site made the initial discovery beneath the bridge.

  • Cause of death: Police said they were unsure how the man died as of Thursday morning.

Medical examiner to determine cause and manner of death

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. Those findings typically guide investigators in narrowing timelines, identifying potential injuries or medical events, and assessing whether the death resulted from natural causes, an accident, suicide, or homicide.

Police said the death appeared suspicious and that a specialized investigative unit was assigned to the case.

Why the investigation may take time

Deaths discovered in outdoor locations can require additional investigative steps, including processing the surrounding area for physical evidence, reviewing any available camera footage from nearby roadways or businesses, and attempting to reconstruct how the individual arrived at the location. Investigators also typically work to notify family members before publicly releasing a victim’s identity.

Police have not announced any arrests or named any suspects. Authorities said the case remains active and that additional details are expected once the medical examiner’s assessment is complete and detectives complete preliminary interviews.
