What police say happened

A 45-year-old man was hospitalized with a gunshot wound after an apparent street robbery on San Antonio’s West Side over the weekend, as police continued searching for the suspects on Monday.

Officers were dispatched shortly before 7:45 p.m. Saturday to the 2400 block of Potosi Street, near Southwest 21st Street, after a reported shooting. Police said they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower body.

In a preliminary account provided to officers, the man said he had been walking near the intersection of Tampico and Southwest 21st streets when a black sedan pulled alongside him. Police said a passenger in the vehicle ordered the man to raise his hands, then struck him with a handgun, knocking him to the ground.

The assailant then took the man’s phone and fired at least one shot before the suspects left the area in the sedan, police said. The victim was transported to a hospital and was expected to survive.

What is known about the suspects and vehicle

Police have not announced arrests in the case and have not released suspect descriptions beyond the report that the assailants were in a black sedan. The investigation remained open as of Monday.

How the case is being investigated

Robbery-and-shooting cases of this type are typically investigated using a combination of witness interviews, medical and forensic documentation, and a search for video evidence from nearby homes, businesses, and traffic cameras. Investigators also commonly attempt to reconstruct a suspect vehicle’s route by identifying camera locations along major corridors and nearby intersections.

  • Time of call: just before 7:45 p.m. Saturday
  • Officer response location: 2400 block of Potosi Street
  • Victim account location: near Tampico and Southwest 21st streets
  • Reported property taken: the victim’s phone

What residents can do with information

Police have not publicly detailed specific evidence they are seeking, but in street robberies involving a vehicle, tips often focus on identifying the car, the number of occupants, distinguishing damage or stickers, and any movement pattern immediately before or after the attack.

Police said the victim’s injuries were non-life-threatening, and the suspects fled before officers arrived.

Anyone with information tied to a black sedan in the area around Southwest 21st Street on Saturday evening, or with relevant camera footage from nearby streets, may be able to assist investigators as they work to identify the suspects.
