San Antonio Refills the River Walk After Scheduled January Drain and Trash, Sediment Cleanup

River Walk water levels restored after nine-day maintenance window
Water levels along the central San Antonio River Walk were restored after a scheduled January draining that allowed city crews and river specialists to complete routine cleanup and maintenance work on the channel.
The 2026 drain took place from Jan. 11 through Jan. 19 and covered the stretch from the Museum Reach to Nueva Street, including the downtown River Loop. The temporary drawdown is part of a recurring maintenance program designed to support water quality, access hard-to-reach infrastructure, and remove accumulated debris and sediment from the riverbed.
What the draining is designed to accomplish
Draining the river creates access for crews to perform work that is difficult or impossible when the channel is full. The maintenance period is used to remove sediment and trash, inspect the river’s structural elements, address needed repairs, and manage biological issues that can affect the river system.
City-led maintenance of the River Walk has been conducted for decades and is typically scheduled in January, a period when tourism volumes are generally lower than peak seasons. The 2026 schedule continued that winter timing.
- Removal of debris and sediment that can accumulate along the riverbed
- Inspection of channel infrastructure and identification of repair needs
- Targeted removal of invasive species during the low-water window
- Coordination to minimize impacts to core River Walk pedestrian areas
Operations, access and business impacts
While the river was down, pedestrian access along River Walk paths remained in place in most areas, and the work was planned to avoid major disruptions such as road closures. However, river-dependent services were affected. Go Rio paused service in the downtown River Walk and Museum Reach areas during the drain period, consistent with operational constraints when water levels are reduced.
The draining provides a rare, full-access window to the river channel for cleanup and infrastructure checks before water levels return to normal.
How this year fits into the broader maintenance cycle
The River Walk has a history of periodic draining for maintenance and cleaning. A prior major draining and maintenance cycle was completed in January 2024, when the city reported the river was refilled by Jan. 18, 2024, after crews removed tens of tons of sediment and debris from targeted sections.
The 2026 work expanded the fully drained area to include the River Loop, aligning the maintenance footprint with a broader set of downtown River Walk segments. With refilling complete, the river corridor returns to normal operations as the city resumes standard monitoring and upkeep.
