What happened

San Antonio police made arrests after a series of downtown shootings in the early morning hours of Sunday, Oct. 20, 2025, left one man dead and another person hospitalized. The investigation unfolded across multiple locations near East Commerce Street and prompted a vehicle pursuit that ended in a crash, with the San Antonio Police Department’s Eagle helicopter used to track the fleeing car.

Police were first called to the 800 block of East Commerce at about 4 a.m. Officers found a 27-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Second shooting reported nearby

A short time later, officers received a second call for a shooting a few blocks away, in the parking lot of a Denny’s near the intersection of East Commerce and Bowie Street. That victim was taken to a hospital; the person’s condition was not released in the initial police account.

Investigators treated the events as connected, based on the timing and proximity of the incidents. Witness statements helped officers develop suspect descriptions as the response expanded from a crime-scene investigation into an active search for those believed to be involved.

Helicopter-assisted tracking and arrests

Police attempted to stop a Nissan Altima believed to be connected to the shootings. When the driver did not comply, officers pursued the vehicle. The Eagle helicopter tracked the car during the chase until it crashed into a tree near Burnet Street and North Onslow Street in a residential area.

Two suspects were taken into custody after the crash, while additional occupants were reported to have fled and remained at large at the time of the initial report. Investigators said they believed they had recovered the firearm used in the shooting.

Why the helicopter mattered

SAPD’s Eagle helicopter functions as an aerial platform that can support patrol and investigations by maintaining visual contact during pursuits and guiding ground units in real time. In incidents that rapidly move across neighborhoods, aviation support can help reduce the risk of losing sight of a suspect vehicle and can help coordinate containment after a crash or foot pursuit.

Police urged anyone with information about the shootings or outstanding suspects to contact SAPD.

What remains unknown

  • The identity of the deceased victim had not been released in the initial public information.
  • The hospitalized victim’s condition was not provided.
  • Investigators had not announced charges, a motive, or the number of suspects still being sought at the time of the initial report.

The case remained active as detectives continued to interview witnesses, review available evidence, and work to locate any remaining suspects.
