Spring Forward and Stay Alert

As San Antonio residents adjust their clocks for the start of Daylight Saving Time this morning, commuters should prepare for a mix of significant long-term construction shifts and specific Sunday evening closures. While Sunday mornings typically offer the lightest traffic of the week, several major projects under the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) are entering critical phases that will affect travel through the Stone Oak area and downtown. Drivers are reminded to stay vigilant as the one-hour loss of sleep may impact reaction times on the road.

Loop 1604 and Blanco Road: The DDI Shift

One of the most significant changes for North Side drivers is the ongoing transition at the Loop 1604 and Blanco Road intersection. TxDOT is in the final stages of implementing the city’s first Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). While the full reconfiguration is expected to be complete by late summer, current traffic patterns require Blanco Road drivers to shift to the left side of the bridge while crossing over the highway. If you are navigating this area today, please watch for the following:

  • Temporary traffic signals and concrete barriers directing traffic into the new braided lane configuration.
  • Restricted pedestrian access across the overpass due to active equipment and final bridge finishing.
  • Mandatory use of bypass lanes for those traveling on the Loop 1604 frontage roads to avoid the main intersection construction.

Evening Lane Closures on US 90

For those planning to be on the road late tonight, a new construction phase begins on US 90. Starting at 8:00 PM this evening, Sunday, March 8, crews will perform final striping on both eastbound and westbound lanes of US 90 between Loop 1604 and Montgomery Road. This work is expected to reduce traffic to a single lane in both directions and will continue through the early morning hours. Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes such as Marbach Road or expect moderate delays in the far West Side corridor.

I-35 Bridge Repairs and Downtown Delays

In the downtown area, the multi-month bridge joint repair project on I-35 continues to impact travel. Alternating lane closures remain in effect on the northbound lanes of I-35 between I-10 and I-37. While weekend traffic is usually thinner, the reduced lane capacity near the downtown Finesilver curve and the I-37 interchange can cause sudden bottlenecks, especially during peak afternoon travel. Motorists should also be aware of continuing work on the I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) project near the Loop 410 interchange, where bridge work may cause intermittent frontage road detours.

VIA Metropolitan Transit Service Updates

Public transport users should note that VIA is now operating under the Better Bus Plan schedules implemented earlier this year. Significant improvements to frequency and route realignments are active for over 30 routes, including the new Skip service on Route 9 and extensions to the Texas A&M University-San Antonio campus. As it is Sunday, most routes will be running on their standard weekend schedules, but riders should stay aware of potential detours in the downtown area and near the Stone Oak Park & Ride due to the aforementioned roadway shifts.
