A long-running civic event returns for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Thousands of residents and visitors gathered Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, on San Antonio’s East Side for the city’s 39th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. March and Celebration, one of the largest MLK Day public commemorations held in the United States.

The in-person march followed a roughly 2.75-mile route, beginning at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academy at 3501 Martin Luther King Drive and ending at Pittman-Sullivan Park, 1101 Iowa St., where the day continued with a public festival program.

Logistics, route details, and safety rules

Organizers opened lineup early in the morning ahead of the 10 a.m. start. The procession moved along Martin Luther King Drive through the surrounding neighborhood, with traffic controls and a standing rule barring motorcycles, cars, and other motor vehicles from joining the march route.

To support attendance, free shuttle transportation operated between designated parking areas and the start of the march during the morning lineup period, with return shuttles running in the afternoon following the conclusion of the walk and the start of park programming.

Program at Pittman-Sullivan Park

After the march, the celebration continued at Pittman-Sullivan Park with a main stage and multicultural performances, along with food and merchandise vendors and information booths. The park layout also included designated areas focused on health and wellness, as well as youth activities.

This year’s featured guests included Olympic and world champion gymnast Gabby Douglas, announced as the keynote speaker, and Grammy-winning performer Coco Jones, scheduled as the headlining musical act.

Weather and turnout

The event took place amid winter conditions that began with cold morning temperatures before warming later in the day. Despite the early chill, the march drew broad participation across families, community organizations, labor groups, activists, and students, reflecting the event’s role as both a public commemoration and a large-scale gathering that regularly brings substantial crowds to the East Side.

Context: an enduring local tradition

Now in its 39th year as an annual city-organized march and celebration, the San Antonio event has become a recurring focal point for Martin Luther King Jr. Day observances in South Texas. Its scale requires coordinated transit planning, staging, and safety measures, while its programming continues to blend civic ceremony, cultural performance, and community services in a single day.

  • Start: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academy, 3501 Martin Luther King Dr.
  • Finish: Pittman-Sullivan Park, 1101 Iowa St.
  • Distance: about 2.75 miles
  • Key elements: march, stage performances, vendors, health-and-wellness and youth areas

The annual march brought together multiple sectors of the community in a shared public observance of Dr. King’s life and legacy.
