What investigators say happened

A wrong-way collision on Interstate 10 in San Antonio ended with an arrest on suspicion of intoxication after an SUV entered opposing lanes and struck another vehicle, triggering a crash that involved three vehicles.

The collision occurred at about 5:48 a.m. on a Sunday in February 2025 in the 5500 block of I-10. Police reported that a 34-year-old man, identified as Jersson Rios, was driving an SUV westbound in the eastbound lanes when he collided with a vehicle driven by 21-year-old Anaihi Carcamo.

Emergency crews pronounced Carcamo dead at the scene. Rios was taken to a hospital, and police said he was found to be driving while intoxicated. Authorities indicated he would be booked on an intoxication manslaughter charge once released from medical care. The investigation was described as ongoing at the time of the report.

How Texas law frames the alleged offense

In Texas, intoxication manslaughter is a homicide offense that applies when a person, by accident or mistake, causes another’s death while operating a motor vehicle in a public place while intoxicated. The charge generally hinges on two core elements investigators must establish: intoxication under state definitions and a causal connection between the intoxicated driving and the death.

Cases of wrong-way driving can involve additional investigative questions, including how the driver entered the freeway, whether the wrong-way travel began on an on-ramp or frontage road, and whether there were missed opportunities to correct course before impact.

What is known and what remains unclear

Authorities have said the crash involved three vehicles, but publicly released details have focused on the initial collision between the wrong-way SUV and Carcamo’s vehicle. At the time the arrest information was released, details that commonly emerge later in fatal-crash investigations had not been publicly specified, including:

  • Where and how the SUV entered the freeway going the wrong direction.
  • The identity and condition of other drivers involved in the three-vehicle crash.
  • Whether field sobriety testing, a warrant, or a blood draw was used to evaluate intoxication.
  • Whether any additional charges could apply based on injuries, crash dynamics, or prior history.

Why wrong-way crashes are treated as high-risk incidents

Wrong-way freeway collisions are particularly dangerous because they can lead to high closing speeds and limited reaction time for drivers traveling in the correct direction. Law enforcement agencies typically prioritize rapid response to wrong-way reports, while crash investigators later reconstruct the sequence of events using physical evidence, vehicle damage patterns, and roadway geometry.

If you see a vehicle traveling the wrong way on a divided highway, call 911 immediately, avoid passing, and move to the right lane when safe.

Police have not released further updates on the case beyond the initial charge information and the statement that the investigation remained ongoing.
