Crash closes southbound lanes near downtown before reopening

A 20-year-old man was killed early Monday, March 9, 2026, after the Chevrolet Corvette he was driving left Interstate 37 southbound near downtown San Antonio, traveled through a guardrail and continued down an embankment. Authorities said a passenger in the car was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The crash was reported around 2 a.m. on the southbound lanes of I-37 near Carolina Street, a segment of highway that connects downtown to the city’s South and Southeast sides and carries heavy commuter traffic during morning rush hours. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Victim identified; investigation focuses on loss of control

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the driver as Mathew Xavier Galvan. Police said the Corvette’s driver lost control before the vehicle breached the guardrail and went down a hill. No additional vehicles were described as being involved in the initial account released Monday morning.

Investigators typically work to reconstruct a single-vehicle highway crash by examining factors such as roadway conditions, vehicle speed, tire marks, the point where the vehicle left the travel lane, and evidence of driver impairment or distraction. Authorities had not publicly detailed what may have caused the driver to lose control, and no timeline was released for when a final crash determination could be available.

Traffic impacts and roadway safety context

Southbound mainlanes of I-37 were closed for a period following the crash as emergency crews responded and the scene was processed. The lanes later reopened. Such closures can involve multiple tasks, including medical response, documenting the collision, vehicle recovery, and evaluation of damage to roadside safety hardware.

Guardrails are designed to help reduce the severity of roadway-departure crashes by redirecting vehicles and absorbing energy, but high-speed impacts can still lead to catastrophic outcomes, particularly when a vehicle exits the roadway and encounters changes in elevation such as slopes or drainage features.

What to expect next

  • Authorities may release additional findings after reviewing physical evidence and any available video.

  • If toxicology testing is ordered as part of the death investigation, results can take weeks to months before being finalized.

  • Any significant damage to guardrail systems typically requires inspection and repair to restore full protective function.

If you witnessed the crash or have relevant video, investigators generally encourage sharing that information directly with law enforcement handling the case.

The passenger’s identity was not released Monday morning, and no further injuries were reported.
